‘Year One’ by Nora Roberts

This book review was part of a podcast discussion.
Listen to the episode here.

The apocalypse has come in the form of a virus. Society crumbles as millions of people die. Scavengers kill to survive, raiders kill for the fun of it, and the government is conducting testing on those who are immune and those who now have… abilities.

After the virus dubbed “the Doom” unleashes magical abilities in a portion of the immune population, many just try to survive. Lana and Max, two witches who escaped New York after the Doom, try to connect with Max’s younger brother, the only family member he was able to contact after communications went down. Arliss, a news anchor, and Fred, an intern, must escape before the government rounds them up for exposing a dangerous secret. In the hospital, Dr. Rachel and paramedic Jonah help Katie, a woman who lost her whole family except for the babies she’s about to give birth to.

Witches, fairies, elves, and shapeshifters reside in this modern/post-apocalyptic world, where the battle is waged on all sides: light vs dark, humans vs magicks. A hope for a cure seems lost. Will they find new hope?

I really enjoyed this book and the next, which is slightly different as it takes place years after the first. Book three is next on my list!
